Why Do I Feel Anxious for No Reason? Causes and When to Seek Help

Riya (name changed) called me on a Sunday evening. She had a good job, a loving family and nothing seemed wrong. Still, her chest felt tight, her mind kept racing and she could not sit still. "Nothing has happened," she said. "So why am I feeling anxious for no reason?"
Feeling anxious for no reason is one of the most common things people share in my online counselling sessions. The good news is that it is rarely "for no reason" at all.
What Does Feeling Anxious for No Reason Actually Mean?
Anxiety is your body's alarm system. It is meant to warn you about danger. But sometimes the alarm rings even when there is no fire. You feel worried, restless or on edge, yet you cannot point to one clear cause.
In most cases, the trigger is there. It is just small, hidden or built up over time. Work pressure, poor sleep or constant overthinking can quietly switch the alarm on.
Common Signs of Feeling Anxious for No Reason
Anxiety shows up in both body and mind. You may notice:
• A racing heart or a tight chest
• Shaky hands, sweating or restlessness
• Stomach upset or loss of appetite
• Trouble falling asleep, or waking up at 3 AM with worry
• Constant "what if" thoughts
• A strange feeling that something bad is about to happen
Top Causes of Feeling Anxious for No Reason
These are the reasons behind feeling anxious for no reason that I see most often in my practice:
1. Hidden stress. Deadlines, money worries and family pressure add up. You may get used to them, but your body does not.
2. Poor sleep. Even a few bad nights can make your mind jumpy and your emotions harder to handle.
3. Too much caffeine or screen time. Extra chai, coffee, energy drinks and late-night scrolling keep your nervous system on high alert.
4. Overthinking. Replaying old talks and planning for every worst case keeps your body tense. If this is you, read my blog on how to stop overthinking.
5. Past experiences. Old hurts, loss or a stressful childhood can stay in the body. A small thing today can bring the feeling back.
6. Health and hormone changes. Thyroid issues, low vitamin levels, PCOS or menopause can feel like anxiety. This is why a basic check-up with your doctor is a smart step.
Riya's Story: What Changed for Her
Riya had been feeling anxious for no reason for months. When she came for her first session, we did not hunt for one big reason. We looked at her week instead. She was sleeping five hours, drinking four cups of coffee and saying yes to everything at work. Under all this, she was carrying worry about a family matter she had never spoken about.
Over a few sessions, we worked on her thought patterns and built a simple sleep routine. She told me later, "The feeling has not vanished completely, but now I know what to do when it comes."
What You Can Try at Home Right Now
If you are feeling anxious for no reason today, these small steps can help you settle:
• Slow breathing: breathe in for 4 counts and out for 6 counts, for two minutes.
• Name it: tell yourself, "This is anxiety, not danger."
• Ground yourself: notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch and 3 you can hear.
• Cut back on caffeine, especially after lunch.
• Move your body: a 20-minute walk helps release stress.
These tips help in the moment, but they may not fix the root cause.
When to Seek Help for Feeling Anxious for No Reason
It may be time to speak to a psychologist if feeling anxious for no reason is becoming part of your daily life. Not sure? My blog on the signs you need therapy can help. Consider reaching out if:
• The anxiety lasts more than two weeks
• It affects your sleep, work, studies or relationships
• You avoid people, places or situations because of it
• You get panic attacks, such as sudden fear, breathlessness or chest tightness
• You depend on alcohol, smoking or endless scrolling to cope
• You feel low or hopeless along with the anxiety
You do not have to wait for things to get worse. If chest pain or breathlessness is new or severe, please see a doctor first to rule out physical causes.
If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS at 14416 or go to the nearest hospital.
